Resumo

In order to facilitate positive outcomes for children and adults with special needs, professionals who work in related fields often need to interact with family members and the community. Educational, healthcare and treatment option plans are much more effective with input and follow-through from parents, siblings and others in the child or adult’s daily life. A trusting relationship between professionals and family is important to develop open communication and family involvement. When do the professionals who are responsible to teach, treat or support a child or adult with a disability have an opportunity to learn how to build those important trusting relationships within their work? For some, personal life experiences may enhance their work. Teachers, physicians and therapists may gain insight from students in their class, patients on their caseload and their family members. Many continue to search for ways to improve family involvement. Others enter their careers without any personal experiences. Personal stories offer a way to gain insight to a parent or family member’s perspective and can be used to prompt a new way of looking at a situation. We are happy to share these moments experienced by one mother as her child with a disability grew into an adult. The stories are true and reflect her perspective. As she grew as a mother and into an advocate for her son and family, she learned there is a “dance” that evolves between the family and the outside world. The dance takes many forms and can change in an instant. This book is designed as a resource for college students, educators, healthcare, other human services providers, and families to be used to spark conversation and open a way of thinking that will expand perspective. We wish you the best in your work and thank you for your dedication. Welcome to the “dance.” Theresa and Kathleen
