Resumo

This book took me two years to write, following the brain injury damage I suffered in January 2014, at the age of 47. The type of impact I encountered reduced my memory and understanding of words, which had been essential for me prior to my injury. My decision to write this book has, thankfully, been crucial in helping me reconstruct my brain. I hope it also convinces all its readers that my new brain isn’t, and my previous life wasn’t, too boring. My TBI was I believe quite complicated. It necessitated a couple of weeks in a coma after they had redesigned my skull to save my life. As this occurred in France, whilst on holiday, it was understandably a much bigger challenge for my family than it was me. I have attempted to balance the book between my life prior to my traumatic brain injury (TBI), and what the hospitals, my wife, children, family and friends coped with following my survival. I love and respect my family massively and to a certain extent all other human beings. Over the years I have been lucky enough to get to know hundreds of different people. I would not wish any of them to ever suffer physical damage to their brain. Due to the complexity of brain injuries it is hugely difficult for all the superb surgeon’s, neuropsychologists and nurses to deal with them. I love and respect all of them, especially those in France! Primarily, I hope that my book is helpful and useful to any family that has had to cope with a loved one being subjected to a TBI, or anyone who knows someone who has encountered one. As the book contains diaries and specific comments from my wife, in addition to my thoughts and opinions, I hope it presents a good balance as to how we both dealt with a compulsory unintended life threatening experience. Something neither of us will ever forget, that’s for sure! Importantly for me, and other brain injury victims, the profit of each book will be totally donated to a very important charity; HEADWAY the brain injury association.
