Resumo
This is the publication of an innovative Irish-language drama by Irish playwright andwriter, Michael McGee. Aislingí Grádha Oídhche Lúghnasa (translation – the love visions of thefeast of Lughnasa) is a contemporary ‘re-imagining’ of William Shakespeare’ A Midsummer Night’sDream. Elements of the plot of Shakespeare’s masterpiece are transposed to the modern dayGaeltacht (the Gaelic speaking areas of Ireland) and are infused with Gaelic and modern sensibilities.Out of this new premise, a completely new and original piece of theatre is created. As well asdelving into themes of love and disorder, the play also offers insights into the contrasts andcontradictions of the modern day Gaeltacht and into the dynamics of the indigenous language ofIreland. The play is influenced by post-colonial theory, by performativity and by indigenous theatrepractice. It draws elements of classical and indigenous theatre practice together and celebrates arich and ornate Gaelic culture. Michael McGee is currently residing in Brazil on a cultural visa and iscompleting an 18 month writers residency with the São Paulo based literary publishing house, Booksand Writers. Books and Writers are publishing the play and it is designed by Inês Quintanilha.
