I recently attended my ten-year-old daughter’s gymnastics team banquet. During the ceremony, my one year old baby became very restless and refused to sit through it any longer. I stood up with her and quickly rushed to the back of the auditorium where she could have some room to walk and get her restlessness out. My two and three-year-old trailed behind us. Little did I know, a husband of one of my closest friends, who I attended high school with, watched as I herded my three children to the back where he stood while my ten-year-old walked across the stage to receive her certificate. He knew my story. I could feel him watching me. I was praying that my loud kids weren’t distracting him from his daughter’s moment to shine. A few minutes later, he asked if he could speak with me. I was horrified, thinking he was about to tell me how awful my kids were behaving. To my surprise, he commended me for being such a good mom, nurse, and student. I became shocked when he asked me to speak about my experiences as a teen mom to other teen moms. The thought never crossed my mind. As the ceremony went on, I thought more about his suggestion and recalled the memory I had of attending a teen-specific lamaze class once a week in the sketchy area of town. I was always so excited and looked forward to going because it was the one time I got to be around people who were just like me. It gave me the feeling of being normal again. It gave me hope and excitement about becoming a mother. The teacher who taught the course spoke to us sincerely and without judgement. It felt like my safe haven. Why not spread the same feeling to other teen moms out there? Why not tell my story even further by writing a book about my successes as a teen mom? It is possible and I am all for helping out any teen mom. You deserve the same amount of love and credit as any other mom. So here it goes.
