A bird’s eye evaluation of existing diet regimens is done at the beginning of the book. It is concluded that Intermittent Fasting is the best answer to diminish weight gradually through small, easy to achieve lifestyle changes. The author is a medical graduate (Universidad Central de Venezuela) and Ph.D. (University College, London University U.K.), Pofessor of Biochemistry. He was Director of the Instituto de Medicina Experimental, Faculty of Medicine, UCV and is now retired. Overweight has been his main subject of study in the last 30 years. In this book he talks amiably and in simple terms about cell structure and the body’s energetic needs. Basal Metabolic Rate is explained and regulation of appetite and hunger through the action of ghrelin and leptin are reviewed; the role of hormones and the Central Nervous System in the process are briefly covered in understandable terms. With this knowledge as background the author recommends the reader to attempt following a benign and simple regimen with small changes in lifestyle (mild intermittent fasting is the main component) that will end up in weight loss free of the well known and feared ‘rebound’ after a few months, a cause of much frustration in countless cases. In an appendix the case is made for a balanced diet and essential nutrients, including aminoacids and omega 3 fatty acids.Following scientific custom, the author asked for opinion about the book to nine ‘referees’: five laypersons, two doctors and two biochemists. It was approved in excellent terms by all.
