It’s estimated that it killed 100,000 people in a year and a half – a quarter of London’s population. The compilation consists of 3 works. A JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR by DANIEL DEFOE is a novel written as an authentic history and presented as an eyewitness account of the events in London at the time of the Great Plague. LOIMOLOGIA is a treatise, published in 1720, by Dr. NATHANIEL HODGES, who was one of the few physicians that remained in the city in 1665. His treatise is a first-hand account of the Great Plague and one of the important sources of Defoe’s work. The third part of this compilation is a complete work of fiction: OLD ST. PAUL’S by WILLIAM HARRISON AINSWORTH is a historical romance that describes two catastrophic events in consecutive years of 1665 and 1666 – the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London.
